How to Choose a Reputable, Qualified HVAC Contractor
May 18, 2018
It can be frustrating and exhausting to find a reputable HVAC contractor who will get the job done right the first time. To make it easy on you, we’re sharing the best ways to check for quality and professionalism when it comes to choosing a reputable heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) contractor.
How to Choose an HVAC Contractor
1. License, Bond, and Registration
In order for an HVAC technician to operate legally in the United States, they must be licensed and bonded. The law usually requires the contractor’s state license number to be printed on any piece of advertising, such as websites, flyers, and truck wraps. Simply seeing a license number, however, isn’t enough.
Before hiring any home contractor, look up their license number on your state government’s website. Go online to verify contractor licenses in Colorado. If you cannot find the information you are looking for online, ask the contractor for all proper documentation and verify it before making a decision.
2. Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA)
ACCA makes it easy to find a good contractor by maintaining a list of reputable contractors. Reach out to ACCA first before looking for your contractor.
3. Better Business Bureau (BBB) Rating
BBB has a lot of great information on companies including their BBB rating, customer disputes and how they were resolved.
4. Referrals and Reviews
Look up the contractor online and check for online reviews on Facebook, HomeAdvisor, AngiesList, BBB, and other sites. When you speak with them on the phone, ask for recent referrals you can contact to get more detailed information on how the company works.
5. NATE Certification
If your HVAC technician is NATE-certified, that should give you a lot of peace of mind. NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence. In order to receive the status of being NATE-certified, the technicians must have passed a variety of tests, which include industry knowledge and customer service.
6. Contracts and Guarantees
Before you sign anything, read the full contract for proper documentation and detailing of the work. There should be an area about how disputes are resolved, what happens if something changes, and other important information including warranties and guarantees.
Do not allow any work to begin until a written proposal has been signed by both parties. By specifying project costs, model numbers, job schedule, and other important information, you will be protected in the event of a dispute.
Remember, the lowest price may not be the best choice. Don’t just compare the project costs when comparing HVAC contractor bids. Compare energy efficiency, warranties, customer service, customer reviews, and more.
Use the Bid Installation Checklist from Energy Star if you are replacing a heating and/or cooling system.
